Rooibos Tea - a tea with class, style and dignity

My first experience with Rooibos tea was at a tea house in Canada in the city of London, Ontario.

I was browsing through the stores in the market square when I noticed the tea store and just sitting outside the store, on a table was a glass tea pot, with this golden reddish coloured tea. There was a sign inviting customers to sample the tea. I have to admit it wasn’t the tea that attracted me initially but the 2 level glass tea pot with a tea light sitting in the lower compartment warming the tea. It was such an elegant looking set and yet so functional. I could just visualize that on my dining table.

Next, my eye or should I say my body was drawn to the tea. It was a cool fall day and there is nothing like a nice warm cuppa to warm the bones.

I took a sip of the tea and the tea light definitely did a nice job of keeping the brew comfortably warm. I was very pleasantly surprised by the flavour of the tea. It tasted naturally sweet and had a nice nutty flavour to it without being too overpowering.

Other people came by and sampled the tea while I was sipping mine and a few of them commented on the soothing and very satisfying taste as well. It was an interesting observation but we all seemed surprised by how the tea tasted. I guess we were all novices, being exposed to this gem of a tea for the first time.

So, having discovered this new treasure, I did a little research to find out a little more about Rooibos. Grown in the Cederberg region of the Western Cape province in South Africa, Rooibos is harvested from needle-like leaves and stems of the plant Aspalathus linearis.

This humble herb, indigenous to a select region of South Africa, is slowly making its mark in the world.

Also known as “Red Bush”, Rooibos is naturally caffeine free. It contains no colours, additives or preservatives, making it a natural beverage of choice for the health conscious.
