What is Black Tea?

Black Tea is made from leaves that have been fully oxidized, and this produces the deep rich and robust flavour. This tea retains its flavours for several years while green tea usually loses its flavour within a year.

The Health Benefits of Green Tea are renowed. However, it's not just Green Tea that has all the medicinal properties. The health benefits of the different types of teas have their own place in the tea world, be it black, green, white or oolong. I grew up drinking the black brew but I have to admit though that in my younger days, I knew nothing about the benefits of tea. I drank it because I loved it.

Growing up in an Indian household, one of my all time favourites is Chai which is an indian tea made with a unique combination of spices. With its smooth flavour and velvet consistency, it's almost like a Chai Latte.

As you browse through the different varieties, remember, you don't have to feel like an expert to enjoy this beverage and here is where tea conversations can start and create a lively discussion and debate amongst friends.

You can also connect tea to your mood. Picture the evening.........you've had this wonderful evening with friends, good food, wine, great conversations and now to top it off, you are going to have that perfect cup of tea before hitting the road. Will it be a wake-up tea to prepare you for the long drive home or perhaps a relaxing tea for the walk down the street or maybe even a sexy or happy tea. I did say tea is all about fun. Check out the Mood Teas and see which tea fits at that moment in time.

Here are some of the more common teas. As you read through, notice some very enticing trends; malty, champagne, wine like flavour – with descriptions like that, how can you resist tea!

Assam

This is a major tea growing area in India. Assam tea has a dark, slightly malty blend with a rich, robust flavour. This is popular as a morning “wake-up” beverage due to its strength

Ceylon

Ceylon tea is grown in Sri Lanka. This is a popular medium-strength variety with a crisp aroma reminiscent of citrus.

Darjeeling

Darjeeling tea is light, with a slightly flowery aroma which makes this ideal for afternoon or evening entertaining. Grown in the foothills of the Himalayas, Darjeeling is often called the “champagne of teas”.

Earl Grey

This is a blend of Chinese tea, flavoured with a citrus flavour from oil of bergamot. This is a very popular afternoon refresher.

English Breakfast

One of the classic blends. This is a strong-flavoured brew, of Ceylon tea from Sri Lanka and Indian or Kenyan teas. This is another popular morning tea because of its strength.

Keemun

Keemun is a smooth Chinese tea from Oimen County, Anhui Province, near Huang Shan. High grade Keemun teas have a wine-like flavour

Jasmine Tea

As the name suggests, this is scented with jasmine flowers, often pouchong or another non-black tea, but sometimes made with the black brew.

What are the Health Benefits of Black Tea?

In a Green Tea vs Black Tea debate, there is more evidence and studies done on green tea. But for everyone out there who loves the black brew, don't despair. There are health benefits associated with your favourite drink.
